Mate Kombucha: Mate tea has these positive effects

Our new Kombucha refreshes in a gentle way

Our new variety Kombucha Mate combines a slightly smoky mate taste with a pleasantly sweet and sour kombucha. The tea from South America has a long tradition and is valued for its beneficial effects on the organism. Mate tea combines the various positive properties of antioxidants, theobromine and caffeine. Mate tea is the perfect coffee alternative that gently wakes you up and lets you start your day full of energy.

How is mate tea traditionally prepared and drunk?

Mate tea is made from the brew of dried leaves of the mate bush (Ilex paraguariensis). Strictly speaking, it is not real tea at all, because it does not come from the genus of the tea plant Camellia Sinensis. The mate plant is mainly cultivated in southern Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay and it is hard to imagine everyday life without it. The crushed leaves of the mate bush (also called yerba) are infused with cold or hot water and drunk from a gourd (also called matí). Traditionally, a special drinking tube with a small sieve is used to drink from the small, bulbous vessel. This way, the mate leaves are not drunk and the tea can even be re-brewed several times. In Brazil, however, the Mate leaves are finely ground and called Erva Mate.

And this is how you can prepare warm mate tea yourself:

  1. Fill the gourd halfway with mate leaves.
  2. Cover the opening of the gourd with the palm of your hand, then turn it upside down. Then gently shake everything back and forth. This allows the coarser leaves to separate from the finer ones.
  3. Then press the mate leaves with a little warm water on the inner edge of the gourd.
  4. After you have put the drinking straw in the gourd and the leaves have swollen, slowly pour warm water (approx. 70 °C) over the rest of the container.
  5. Now you let everything steep for 2-3 minutes and the tea can be drunk.
